2018: A Year in Review
Wow! What a year 2018 was for the Mamas & Co. community. We saw a lot of change and growth, not only for our community as a whole but for many of our member businesses. We wanted to share some of the highlights from this past year, as well as give you a sneak peek of what’s in store for 2019.
We started the year off with a bang, as we hosted our largest ever Business Bootcamp conference in April of 2018. We were honored to have keynote speaker Julie Cole of Mabel’s Labels join us and share her inspiring story. We also welcomed member Cynthia Mason, who shared her thoughts on the importance of protecting our intellectual property through trademarking. We had a stellar panel of member experts share their wealth of knowledge on all things Digital Marketing including Holly LaRochelle, Rachel Di Martino of Geek Unicorn and Sara Vartanian. All in all, it was a day full of information and inspiration!
Later in the summer, we announced the inauguration of the Mamapreneur Fund, which is our grant where we awarded one deserving member a prize valued at over $2,000. Given this was the first time we launched this initiative, we were pleased to see over 40 of our mama members apply.
It was a thrill to crown member Allison Venditti of Career Love as our first ever Mamapreneur Fund recipient at our annual conference, MamaCon in late October. Our two runners-up were Jana Girdauskas of The Period Purse and Ronit Soroksky of League of Moms who both received complimentary 2019 Mamas & Co. Memberships.
October’s MamaCon was also our most successful yet. We were honoured to have Erica Ehm join us as our keynote speaker. Erica spoke eloquently about her journey and the importance of taking bold action. We also had Shannon Lee Simmons speak about financial leadership and Dr. Stacy Thomas speak on finding your authentic self.
MamaCon is by far our largest and most powerful event of the year for us. And for the past 3 years, we have been proud to host it at the Ralph Thornton Community Centre in Leslieville, Toronto. However, we have now outgrown this space, so we are excited to announce that our next conference – Business Bootcamp in April 2019 – will be held at the elegant and very central The Spoke Club. More on this event in the months to come.
This past fall we were excited to add a new member to our team and announced that Camilla Brown has joined us as Community Manager. Camilla brings with her a ton of experience and has already been handling a lot of our member engagement, so we were pleased to officially welcome her to the team in November.
On the subject of ‘new beginnings’, it was with mixed emotions that we announced that co-leader Emma Rohmann is stepping down from the leadership team. Emma has been with our community for the past 3 years and has had a significant impact on the organization. Emma will now be focusing her energy on her own business Green at Home and we wish her every success. While she will be missed on the team, we are thrilled she will be staying on as a member.
A few weeks ago at our Holiday Party, we were pleased to award 3 deserving members with our very prestigious year-end awards. Amanda Laird won our Mama Mentor award due to her outstanding business growth and her desire to share her skills with our community. Julie Le Jeune of Wish & Give won our Rookie of the Year award for all her hard work in growing her new business as well as her continued drive to connect with and support so many of our other members.
And last but not least, Danielle Lewis of A2D Designs won our Community Ambassador award. This was particularly special because, for the first time, this award was voted on by our members. Danielle was selected by her peers as the mama who most represents our community values. We could not be more grateful for these 3 mamas for embodying the spirit of our community.
2018 truly was our best year yet and we are so excited for what 2019 has in store. One major change we are making is that our membership will include even more member benefits than ever before. We are now including monthly online business classes with top experts. Some of the speakers we have lined up for 2019 include online marketing genius Rick Mulready and the owner of Screw the 9 to 5, Jill Stanton.
These are just a few of the experts we’re excited to bring you in 2019. We hope you will join us as we continue to bring you direct access to the people, skills, and resources to help you fast-track your mamapreneur success!
