From Sweden, With Love

From Sweden, With Love

I was young, only 21 years old when I decided to leave Sweden and study interior design in Melbourne, Australia.  It was scary and unknown. New country, new culture and new language. I had waved goodbye to my mom and childhood friends at the airport and I would be back in 4 years with a BA degree in my hand.

A few years later I found myself in Toronto. I never made it back home to Sweden. I had met someone special and his homeland was Canada. To be honest, I had no clue what Canada was, I knew it was a country but I knew absolutely nothing more then that (can you tell geography was one of my favourite subjects in school?).

The relationship ended but my love for Canada grew. I decided to stay and make this my home. I'm glad I did because never would I have thought that I would be a business owner, meet the love of my life and have two little Swedish / Canadian / French girls (yes my husband is from Europe too and we still decided to stay in Canada).

While on my second maternity leave the thought of doing Kitchen / Bath design on my own (as a side job to being a mom) excited me. At the same time, I was introduced to Mamas & Co. by Julie O while she was kicking my butt at kickboxing. This could not have happened at a better time. I was struggling and had no idea where or how to start this major new step in my life. The women I met were so inspirational, sharing their stories, their struggle and their success all in one evening. I went home that night knowing that I could do this, I can be a business owner and I can make this work.

Being part of the wonderful group of Mamas & Co. got me motivated to start the journey as entrepreneur for real. My website was created and up live within a couple of months and clients started to grow with the help of referrals from this group, previous clients, friends and family.

So when Lianne asked me to co-lead Mamas & Co., I said yes without hesitation.

I sometimes wonder, if I would have stayed in Sweden, where would I have been? I doubt being an entrepreneur would have been on my resume. I find that there is more support for us passionate and driven people wanting to start our own businesses - much more so than in Sweden. (Perhaps I would have had 10 children instead since there's a maximum fee of $400 / month for daycare per family!)
We want to create work, we want to create a future for ourself and our children and the best way in doing so is to do the things we love.

I would never have thought that I would be surrounded by so many incredible women who have decided to take a leap of faith like me and start their own business. It's truly inspirational and it proves that what we do is possible for anyone who wants to and who believes in themselves.

Thank you for being in my life and inspiring me with all that you do.
